So many years, such wonderful times. My heart is heavy, but filled with love for the many hours of joy we all have shared.

what a loss, and what a sad commentary on what's happening in the area.

I am deeply saddened by the this news. I have enjoyed many nights and many pints behind the door of your epic and unforgettable club. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Love,
J.

Deeply Saddened by the news, Mark, Deb, Craig, and all the wonderful people that have supported Club Helsinki over the years. Thank you for your vision, love and enthusiasm Mark and Deb ! We are going to soooo miss Club Helsinki !

"you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone"

8/20/2009

Why are the doors closing? The economy? The rent? What?

8/20/2009

This is the worst news I've experienced/heard in awhile and I've experienced/heard quite a bit. Helsinki is absolutely the number one place I like to frequent in the Berkshires (better than any NYC club I've ever been to). I've been exposed to so many great musicians and new music there. THANK YOU and good luck to you and all the staff in your future endeavors.

8/20/2009

Hot Club, Kelly Joe Phelps, Zubot and Dawson, Jeff Lang, the Wiyos - some of my fav shows

8/20/2009

Oh man, so sorry to hear this.
Definitely not going to feel like GB without the club & cafe. :(

Best to all!

8/20/2009

"you don't miss your water 'til your well runs dry." I hardly know what to say at this point -
sad to realize an era is over...elated to recall how many astonishing and superb intimate shows I had the good fortune to catch there over the years. Faves would include Olu Dara,Forbert,Guy Davis,Holmes Bros, just to name a few. Thanks Muchly and Good Luck "further on down the road"

Why do the Berkshires keep losing the cultural and artistic venues that provide culture for the rest of us. Tanglewood, The Rockwell Museum and Jacobs Pillow are great but Helsinki really provided something for us all...we will miss you greatly. Any chance of organizing a community buy in of the club to keep it open?

8/20/2009

When is the Hudson, NY club opening?

8/20/2009

Oh if only there were a hundred people who could toss a grand apiece into a kitty and save this little joint. From what I hear there is about 24 hours to get something like that together....it is probably too late..but man am i wishing

8/20/2009

It's like losing a large part of your home, your family. Everyone who has worked and played at Helsinki since I've been there, at least, has been the best sort of family-so much so that I continued to work there for the people and the place long after I had a full time job elsewhere.
I will miss working with all of you and proudly saying that I was a 'Helsinki Girl'!!
Peace, Joce

8/20/2009

I'll never forget the night I saw the Tom Tom Club here, even meeting Tina W in the parking lot. And of course the expertly prepared Mojitos!

8/20/2009

Been to live music clubs all around the US and Helsinki ranks among the top...no question about it. We had many great nights here. Jen Durkin and the Bomb Squad, Zydeco Hogs, Tarbox Ramblers, Johnny A, and many others. Saw Dr Tim in some funk jam band that blew the roof off the place. Great, great memories. Met up with a friend from high school for a reunion in GB every year on Dec 27 ( for the last 10 years in a row) ...a night of great food and great live music. Helsinki was always the highlight. Will have to find a new tradition now. Best of luck to all and thank you for opening and running this fine venue. JW

8/20/2009

I will never forget late one night (or early one morning to be honest) Jimmy Dale Gilmore, and Butch Hancock sitting at that wonderful round copper table at stage left. In walks Jimmy LaFave, Andrew Hardin and a few more Texas music legends.

"Wow, this really is like old times in Austin", gleefully chirps an ecstatic Jimmy Dale.

Well, folks, we've had a pretty damn fine run those of us who shared and help make this grand social moment, didn't we?

It's like we that wonderful song goes:
"We don't know what we've got when we got it in our hand
We don't know what we're missin' till we tried it with a friend
Looking straight ahead you'll never see it again
It's just a night 'neath the Terlingua sky

8/20/2009

dealt with Deb some years back, but I've followed Club Helsinki for the past few years -
you've always come across as a class act - not too many class acts in the world of live music venues -
a rare treat, I'm sure you will be dearly missed

So sad to hear the news. You've brought so much amazing music to Gt. Barrington, it's really heartbreaking that you're closing. What can we do to make you reconsider?? :-(

I will bring at least one other person.

We can't imagine a better place to see acts such as the Holmes Brothers and Guy Davis. We had an early date at a Holmes Brothers show in 2004, and popped the big question at another Holmes Brothers show at the club a few months later. We sure hope the music doesn't die...

So sad to hear of your closing. I made the drive west numerous times because I loved your club so much: the club delf shows, the Slip, Haale, Hiromi, Twinemen, etc. Bummed out in Worcester - Stephen

8/21/2009

This is so, so sad. I discovered the Club about a year and a half ago while surfing online, and have made the trek from central CT on several occasions. I absolutely fell in love with the place and turned a few of my close friends on to it! I've seen some great shows; The Felice Brothers, Lizzie West, Eilen Jewel...... And have had such great times! Thank you Club Helsinki!

Our Club....our wonderful club....
The happy place. Beautiful girls, great food, great music...smiles, cozy, warm and interesting....How can I go on without the only place that I feel comfortable. Without Helsinki I am homeless.

8/22/2009

terrible news....have not been this sad about loosing a venue since the wetlands closed...son many great nights over the years, this club is what made gb different from all the other towns in ct and mass, it seems like interesting fun venues cant exist here :(, we wonder why so many artistic good people choose to move west.... i will miss the club greatly, any truth to the previous post about the deal to save?

8/22/2009

8+ Years that I spent employed with you, 15 years of caraway butter, all the bands, all the laughs, I guess I can move away again, GB is officially dead. Thanks for all you guys did for me, I won't ever forget it. Love always. -Ben

what a blessing to have performed in Helsinki three times on its closing month. It was the greatest experience of my growing career as a performing artist. Thanks to Peter, Mark and Debra.

Why do good things end...the world needs community.
Why is my Helsinki community leaving me? I am heartsick.

8/24/2009

As a fan, a member of the press, a radio producer and a musician who has performed at the club, I must say I will miss Helsinki dearly. It will remain long in the memory as one of those legendary rooms where magic happened -- all the time. Marc, Deb and their remarkable staff created a unique venue with a unique vibe, and I'm sure Helsinki Hudson will be even greater.

Love,

We will so miss Club Helsinki--been seeing shows for past 5 yrs. Thanks for all the fun and great music. P&C

8/26/2009

This is an important loss for Berkshire County; thanks for some great music and bonding, this is a special place that secured its spot in Berkshires music history and a great spot on the regional and national circuits, too. Good luck to the Helsinki Family and thx again.

8/27/2009

I'm absolutely floored. The heart and soul of GB is leaving. Many thanks for many wonderful nights.

8/27/2009

Where else could I have sat sipping an expertly made martini just a couple of feet from jazz guitar legend John Scofield (who sampled the audience that night and included us on his next CD!), and on another night been kissed by Miss Leggs Malone. If there is a heaven, and I am fortunate enough to grace its doorway, I suspect it will look alot like Club Helsinki.

Best Cocktails. Best Music. Best Staff. So cozy to be there. Made the world make sense. We are sick about loosing what we love.

8/27/2009

The berkshires have lost one the most wonderful reasons to go to Great Barrington at night. There is nothing else even close for hundreds of miles.
Thank you for the many hours of pleasure (great music, conversation...). I never had a bad moment in either the club or the tea room.
thank you thank you

Mark

8/27/2009

I'm so sorry about this news. What a loss. Best wishes to everyone as they move on.

8/28/2009

What a shame! Helisinki is the place where we discovered Albert Cummings heard Willie Porter live after so many years of listening to his music, enjoyed John Hammond and fell in love with Mary's best anywhere Mojitos.
Gonna miss all the opportunities that Helsinki provided Good luck and the best to all the Helsinki staff
We're all losing

8/30/2009

To Marc and Deb...thanks for all those great nights of live music...you sure know how to throw a party! While we'll sorely miss the Club in GB..we are thrilled to have you in Hudson...we can't wait!!!
Much love, Diane and "Chops" LaConte with the members of The Chops and Sauerkraut Band, ROCKOLA, and all our other musician friends!

Where am I going to get my emergency order of latkes??

Tim Reid Avon, CT

8/30/2009

Thanks for the many years of great music, food, fun. Met Deborah when she was in the thought process about opening the club. She followed her dream. Having many birthday parties with family & friends, Deb cooked up great food. All the staff have been so friendly & always there to please. Watching everyone grow over the years. Its been an important place for all of us living in the Berkshires to be able to hear great live music up front and personal. We will continue to support your new endevor in Hudson. All the best.
Euge & Maria

You’re going out of business... So sad. I guess all the too cool for the room elitist douche bags in GB will have to find another place to hang... I guess all good things come to an end. I’m sure they’ll all find another place to sit around, listen to music and convince each other that they’re still cool.

8/31/2009

God bless you guys and thanks for being the huge part of my life that you guys have been.

$3.5 million proposed to rip up and redo a perfectly quaint and charming main street in great barrington, along with replacing the trees we have now...
but no way to save the club helsinki?
oh, i get it
that makes perfect sense

9/1/2009

crappiest news this year... I cant beleive it

9/2/2009

Closed...No way....This was the only place I could get my husband to go! Will truly miss Cow Town , Eilen Jewell, etc. Hudson? Just not the same....Good Luck! P~

9/3/2009

I miss the music already....in mourning.

9/5/2009

Just remember...Richard Stanley not only strangled the club to death, he killed the last minute effort of some fine local folks who could have kept the space a haven for us all.

9/8/2009

When I moved to the Berkshires 5 years ago, I sat in the audience dreaming of playing at Club Helsinki, but never imagined I could. Well, thanks so much for making my dream a reality when you asked Deafened by Love to play on your famous stage. I can't describe what it means to me. You and your club will be greatly missed. Judy Eddy

9/8/2009

Hey everybody at Club Helsinki

I so loved playing at your club for many reasons. Thanks so much for all the great nights with Pharoah's Daughter and Tribe of Djembe. I enjoyed the vibes, the food, the sound engineer!, and hope to play up at your new spot on the Hudson.. Peace and Love, Benny musicnoir.com

9/8/2009

Deb, Marc, Craig, Matt and everyone else - you guys are the greatest!! Never will we forget your amazing support of WBCR-LP in allowing us to use your wonderful space on Sundays for our Acoustic Brunches, to raise money for the station. Not to mention your support of the whole community in creating wonderful events at the Mahaiwe, in hiring local talent and having a weekly open mic. You made Great Barrington such a special place to be and put us on the musical map. We will miss your presence so much, in town, but you can bet we will be there in Hudson as often as possible and will be talking you up on the air so folks from the Berkshires can make the 1/2 hour trip to see who you bring in at the exciting, new Helsinki on the Hudson! With much gratitude, and all our love, Barbara and Graham

9/11/2009

Such a sad day to come to the website and hear about the closure. I stumbled upon the Helsinki soon after it had opened and immediately thought it had been there forever and I felt right at home. Thank-you so much for bringing the best talent around regardless of genre, I always knew if the Helsinki booked it, they would be great. Jeff Land, Eaglesmith, Gorka, Borges, Brown, Tarbox and on and on. I think I will go have a drink now...
Stephen

10/17/2009

What?!? I was just planning on visiting too. I've only been twice but what great luck I had: Hamiett Bluiett, Meg Hutchinson. Nearby we once a place like this. It went trendy many years ago but you guys had a willful embrace on a soulful vibe. "Oh, untimely death!"

-Sean, Newbury, MA

NOOOOOOOOO!!

Instant heartbreak. Helsinki was an oasis, of great music, good people, and fun.

Crushed to hear it's closed.
